Attic Frost: Causes and Solutions

North Coast Roofing of Ohio understands the challenges homeowners face with frost and ice accumulation in their attics during the cold Ohio winters. Many homeowners are surprised to discover that a "roof leak" in the spring is actually melting frost and ice that accumulated over the winter months. This issue is not typically due to problems with the roof covering itself, but rather a combination of factors related to heat and moisture management within the home.

Understanding the Problem

Attic Icing:

Frost and ice form when warm, humid air rises from the living space into the colder attic, condensing on the underside of the roof sheathing. This is especially common on the north side of roofs, where the sun does not thaw the frost.

The Ice Monster:

Like an ice build-up in a freezer with a bad seal, attic ice is caused by warm, humid air leaking into an insufficiently ventilated roof space.

Key Factors Contributing to Attic Ice:

High Humidity Levels in the Home:

Excess moisture in your home can worsen condensation problems both inside the house and in the attic. The ideal relative humidity in a home should be between 35-40%.

• To reduce humidity, use bathroom and kitchen fans when showering and cooking, use a dehumidifier in the basement if needed, and avoid drying laundry by hanging indoors.

Inadequate Attic Ventilation:

Proper ventilation is crucial to prevent ice buildup.

Make sure insulation is not blocking soffit vents.

These vents allow air to flow through the attic and exit through a top vent, like a ridge vent, box vents, power vents, or gable vents.

Air Leaks from the Ceiling:

Air leaks from the living space into the attic can bring warm, moist air that will condense and freeze. Check for gaps around electrical fixtures, recessed lighting, and attic access points.

Seal any gaps or openings in the ceiling, especially around light fixtures and attic access points. Consider using airtight boxes for recessed lighting, and replace older fixtures with energy efficient LED fittings.

Insulation:

Ensure that your attic has the proper amount of insulation. Insufficient insulation can allow heat to escape into the attic, leading to condensation as warm air cools.
